Small-scale magnetic flux sheet emergence observed with Hinode
We have analysed a full-Stokes quiet-sun data set observed with the Hinode Spectropolarimeter. We present observational evidence of a magnetic flux sheet emergence event. This type of event was recently discovered in simulations and shows, in contrast to the more familiar small-scale loop emergence, a sheet-like granular-scale sized horizontal magnetic flux patch evolving with the entire granule. The opposite polarity footpoints found on either sides of the sheet carry within 10 minutes a large amount of magnetic flux to the surface. Height-dependent Stokes Inversions of the region show a magnetic field topology confirming the sheet-like appearance. The horizontal magnetic flux structure does not seem to ascend further, but is rather torn apart by the granular flows.
