The EIS is designed to realize large effective area and high spatial and spectral resolutions in order to study dynamic phenomena with high time cadence. Despite the fact that the EIS is a normal incident telescope, off-axis optical desing and multi-layer coating of the primary mirror and concave grating enabled high efficiency and high spatial resolution at the same time. The sensitivity of the detector is twice as good as previous instruments. The EIS optics is optimised for two wavelength ranges, namely 170Å - 210Å and 250Å - 290Å.
